ALLEGHENY KENNELS
GOES RAW!!!
After much consideration, research, and many a sleepless nights (thinking), we
decided to switch to RAW feeding our dogs :)  It was a hard decision at first
because of all the unknowns and the convenience of plopping the dog's food
out of a bag....but after taking the first step in Sept 2004 we have most of
our dogs on the BARF(Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet.

Within the first two weeks we saw so much improvement in the dogs coats,
muscle tone, teeth, energy level, and appetites that we were SO happy we
made the switch! And it has only gotten better! As much as it was scary to
start, I laugh at it now, it is SO easy and EXTREMELY rewarding to
feed the dogs a natural, healthy diet!!!
The dogs absolutely LOVE to eat it and I love the results I see in so many
different aspects of their lives!

I decided to put together this page to tell people about how wonderful
RAW feeding your pet is and how easy it can be! I would like to thank the
people who encouraged me and let me know that RAW was a great idea! I
couldn't have done it without your support!
We feed a mix of about 60% Raw Meaty
Bones (RMBs), 20% Raw Organ Meat &
Raw Pureed Veggies, about 15% Raw Pureed
Fruits, and 5% Supplements/Oils. I do add a
small amount of grains to the diet in the form of
boiled rice.  This, for my dogs, seems to keep
their stools extremely consistent.
The dogs have a very diverse food menu and it
is never the same amounts (by portion) or types
of food two times in a row or every day. I feed
enough to keep the dogs in shape and full!  It
could be Chicken Backs for Breakfast one
day and the next a cup of yogurt, to Raw
Cod/Salmon the next day or Pureed Fruit Mix.
The dogs LOVE IT ALL!
MMMMMM!!! Wodi eating a Raw Turkey Wing!!
What I love most about this diet is that the menu
variation never ends!  Whatever I get from the market
that is on sale one day is the supply for the next two
to three weeks for my 3 dogs.
Our RMB's portion of the diet consists of mostly
Raw Chicken.  I buy 40# boxes from my butcher of
Chicken Backs and Necks because of the good ratio
of meat to bone (50/50) and ease to find these meats.
Other times I find sales on any other meat to buy and
freeze for any given meal....beef, turkey, fish, rabbit,
ostrich, and more!  Venison was expecially easy to get
ahold of in the hunting season! I usually serve up the
Offal (Organ Meats) with the RMB's or mix it in w/
the veggie or fruit purees below.
The dogs love all the varities and savor each bite!

Our Veggies and Fruit Mixture usually is served as a weekday evening meal or a weekend morning
meal/mid-day snack. I do the puree'ing when I have the most time in a given day.  I used to prepare the
veggie/fruit mixes on one day of the week and then freeze "patties" of it to serve later in the week, but
since then it is just easier and more fresh to puree right before serving. It only takes a few minutes!
We use a large variety of fruits and veggies, but I always have a couple 'regulars' that I use.  They
include Spinach, Celery, Brocolli, Apples, some Bananas, Carrots, and any other veggies on sale on
any given day I go to the grocery.  I just throw all the ingredients into my food processor FRESH
and puree them up. Whenever there is wilty lettuce and/or left over raw veggies or raw fruits from my
meals, I make sure to save them for the dogs' puree mixes. They don't care if there is a bruise or a little
wilt to the food they eat!  I also add eggs once or twice a week WITH the shell and puree that up too!
Some days we add a little yogurt, rice, or cottage cheese too!
VIOLA! YUMMY VEGGIE MIX!
As Easy As 1 , 2 , 3!
Weekends are usually special in that I like to give the
dogs a "rest" on their tummies.  So I sometimes just
make a fruit/yogurt mix, just rice, just yogurt, or just
cottage cheese portion. The dairy products are
served in a smaller amounts but add much needed
nutrients and biotics to the dogs' diets. Saturday
afternoon is usually my RECREATION BONE
time.  I get a large Raw Soup bone or Raw Knuckle
bone to give one to each dog.  These bones I get in
bulk from my local meat distributor/butcher and freeze
them until I need to use them.
This keeps them busy for quite a while and they love
every minute of it too!

Nupro is an Added Supplement in this Meal.
When Supplementing I like to use a a redi-made
supplement like NUPRO or MISSING LINK.  I
also add things like Ester-C, Salmon Oil, Kelp,
Apple Cider Vineagar, Garlic, and a variety of others
on hand when I feel like it.  The Nupro is my main
supplement that I add to the veggie and fruit puree
mixes.  Many people seem to over do it on the
supplementing.  I like to keep my sweet and simple.
Enough to keep em happy and healthy!
AS  ALWAYS! I use EXTRA caution when
dealing with RAW meat and veggies.  I use these
sanitizing products to clean up, along with good ole'
soap and  hot water.  For any raw meat meals I use
stainless steel bowls so that cleaning up is easy and no
germs are retained in the feeding containers.  All
veggies and fruits are washed before using to get rid
of any gross stuff too!
